A first evaluation was performed in 2019. In light of the renewal of our computing cluster in 2023, we carried out a new GHG emission estimation in 2024. This initiative aims to raise awareness among both users and decision-makers and to guide future sustainability efforts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Our analysis<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">estimated<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the carbon footprint at <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">3.6 g CO\u2082e per core.hour <\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">for 2024<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">includ<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ing<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">hardware<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> manufactur<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">e<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, transpor<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">End of Life stage <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> electricity consumption<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">but also<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">agents <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">impact<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">see Table 1 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">and Figure 1 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">for details<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following assumptions were used for the estimation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>A device lifespan of <strong>7 years<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A <strong>Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)<\/strong> of <strong>1.5<\/strong> for the data center,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The <strong>French electricity mix<\/strong>, with an emission factor of <strong>0.06 kg CO\u2082e \/ kWh<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A total computing time of approximately <strong>16,000,000 core.hours<\/strong> in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The hardware included in the scope consists of <strong>front-end servers, compute nodes, network equipment, and work storage<\/strong> (long-term storage is excluded from the compute-related emissions). GHG emissions from hardware account for the entire lifecycle, from <strong>raw material extraction<\/strong> to <strong>transport<\/strong> and <strong>deployment<\/strong>. Genotoul Bioinfo \u2013 Carbon Footprint in 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On average, emissions from device manufacturing, transport, and EoL account for <strong>31,060 kg CO\u2082e per year<\/strong>, equivalent to <strong>1.98 g CO\u2082e per core.hour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the Genotoul Bioinfo facility consumed a total of 380,300 kWh of electricity.
